Mexma Food aims to have a positive impact on current and future generations in terms of sustainability and sustainable business practices. We take care of our planet and our people. That is why we work together with customers, suppliers and organisations to improve the sustainability of our business activities and products. For Mexma Food, People, Planet and Product are therefore the most important three pillars of sustainable business.
People
People make Mexma: our own employees, but also our suppliers, customers and other stakeholders. We are aware that without these people we cannot fulfil our ambitions. And our ambition is great. We want to make the best possible tortilla every day, we want to be known as a reliable cooperation partner and offer a workplace where people enjoy working and want to perform better every day. Mexma offers structural jobs where ownership is valued. Our employees are given every opportunity to develop their skills and follow training and education. We are not satisfied until we make the best tortillas with committed, satisfied and ambitious people. We have summarised these in four powerful words. Together, these words are our Mexma DNA!
Product
We set high standards for our products and our quality system is therefore IFS certified. Partly in this way, we ensure the very best tortillas every day! We measure the quality of our tortillas on a daily basis, awarding a weekly score to our own tortillas. We also benchmark this rating once a quarter. Mexma wants to be the best in class. We also want consumers to enjoy tasty products responsibly. Besides the traditional wheat tortillas, we therefore also produce whole-grain tortillas, high-protein and Veggie wraps with a minimum of 35% vegetables. All our products contain no artificial aromas or flavours. We also offer our customers the opportunity to improve the product composition in consultation.
Planet
Mexma Food is committed to developing processes that minimise the environmental impact of our operations. Mexma has already taken initiatives to reduce its ecological footprint:
Packaging
Reducing plastic in our packaging is an important part of our strategy. We aim to create an optimal design with a perfect balance between minimal use of plastic and minimal environmental impact and maximum protection of the product. We have therefore reduced the thickness of the proportion of PE material in our primary packaging from 40 microns to 30 microns. This has resulted in a 16% plastic reduction per pack. In addition, our carton packaging is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an international organisation that monitors and promotes responsible forest use worldwide.
Waste
Our dough and tortilla waste is 100% processed into animal feed. In addition, waste reduction initiatives are ongoing. Through various improvement initiatives, rejects within the production lines have already been reduced by 40% last year. Mexma continues to strive to further reduce the waste percentage through an extensive continuous improvement programme.
Mobility
Mobility is another key pillar of our sustainability strategy. We want to streamline all incoming and outgoing transport movements and reduce them wherever possible. To this end, we continuously evaluate and optimise our logistics network. Recently, we reduced the number of transport movements by 25% by, for instance, only working with full loads. This also has a positive impact on CO2 emissions. Meanwhile, Mexma has also expanded its own warehouse, reducing the number of transport movements to and from third parties by another 10%.
Energy
Mexma has a considerable CO2 footprint due, among other things, to its gas-fired ovens. A project group set up especially for this purpose, which also includes various external experts, will focus on reducing this footprint with the following issues already being investigated in concrete terms:
- Purchase of solar panels
- Installation of heat recovery units on our furnaces
- Making our furnaces ‘smart’
Mexma's offices already comply with the energy labels applicable for 2023 by, among other things, installing LED lighting.
